Silence is a city’s worst enemy. Silence on public policy, on how government affects our neighborhoods and schools and transportation. Silence on economic justice. We don’t believe in silence. We’re City Limits, and for more than three decades we’ve given New Yorkers a crucial voice in the world of public decision-making - a strong voice that makes a difference by revealing important stories that otherwise wouldn’t be told.
We’re a nonprofit media organization, working online, in print, and in person to uncover the aspects of public policy that help New Yorkers understand the people, the issues, and the civic pulse that defines our city and its neighborhoods. As we celebrate our 35th anniversary in the new year, City Limits continues to use the power of investigative journalism and in-depth analysis to make New York a stronger city, and a more vibrant and fair society for the millions who call the five boroughs home.

Our investigations are written with you in mind, a citizen concerned about how we collectively make a more equitable and progressive city.
Investing in City Limits has paid off for generations of New Yorkers.
Our roots in public policy are deep. In 1976, as New York faced the existential depths of fiscal crisis, City Limits was established as an information news
service for those with a passion for the city.
It quickly grew from a simple stapled
newsletter to a must-read newsmagazine for policy-makers, public officials, the media, activist and involved citizens.
Over the years, our journalists have
received dozens of awards for their work, including recent recognition from the
Independent Press Institute, the John Jay College Center on Media, Crime and Justice, the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, and the Society of
Professional Journalists.
In these difficult times, City Limits is working to repair some of the damage to our democracy caused by the downsizing of newspapers and their
reporting staffs.
While we’ve worked with large institutions to strengthen our
reporting and coverage of important issues we are most proud of the advocates
and civic leaders who depend on City Limits to bring attention to the issues that
are under-reported by mainstream news outlets. Furthermore, we’re a fertile
training ground for young investigative reporters: our journalists have gone on to
lead reporting at The Daily News, The Village Voice, The Washington Post, and
The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Now more than ever, New York needs the voices and ideas of City Limits.
We certainly can’t sugar coat the challenge the worldwide economic downturn poses to New York. Over the next year, we’ll continue to hit hard on the stories and policy decisions
that affect the lives of everyday New Yorkers. We’ll continue to expand our online
presence and stimulate conversation. And we will increase in-person discussions
built around award-winning journalism directly to New Yorkers in key forums
around our city.
Information is power, and City Limits continues to stand up and report the truth about public policy - about the hard choices our city faces, and the opportunities it should embrace in this young century.
In short, we are not silent. Far from it. City Limits is on the front lines on the key issues that affect the very future of New York. Building on our history of
accomplishment and progressive influence, City Limits continues to serve the
city’s underrepresented voices and provide the vital information and analysis that
creates a stronger, more just society.
We welcome the support of New Yorkers of goodwill who share our goals and vision.
