French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) launches CinéSalon a new film program with the series "Remastered and Restored: Treasures of French Cinema"Presented by
For the inaugural season of CinéSalon, FIAF presents Remastered and Restored: Treasures of French Cinema. With a special focus on new prints and digital restorations, Remastered and Restored pays tribute to the work of archivists and independent distributors dedicated to preserving great French films and ensuring that these masterpieces are available for generations to enjoy. From Max Ophüls to Jacques Demy, the series features a selection of beloved classics as well as some rarely shown gems.
Remastered and Restored kicks off with a new digital restoration of René Clément’s dazzlingly sinister 1960 psychological thriller Purple Noon, presented in its U.S. Premiere. Set against the backdrop of the Tyrrhenian sea off the coast of Italy, an impossibly handsome Alain Delon stars as the title character in this noir en couleur adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley, Patricia Highsmith’s chilling tale of seduction, identity theft, and murder.
Presented in a new 35mm print, Eric Rohmer’s witty 1986 masterpiece Summer follows a headstrong yet emotionally adrift woman as she attempts to resurrect a thwarted vacation and embarks on a quixotic pursuit of the sublime. Agnès Varda’s sharply observed New Wave classic Cleo from 5 to 7, shown in a new digital restoration, chronicles two hours in the life of a Parisian pop star as she awaits the results of a medical test and faces a newly uncertain destiny.
In Boudu Saved From Drowning, Jean Renoir’s brilliant 1932 satire, an affluent Parisian bookseller attempts to domesticate a suicidal tramp to disastrous, and hilarious effect. A vivid portrait of its time, this much-loved classic, presented in a new digital restoration, remains bitingly relevant. One of Jacques Demy’s lesser-known gems, Une chambre en ville stars Dominique Sanda and features a score by Michel Colombier in a darkly romantic melodrama set against the backdrop of a 1955 shipbuilders strike in Nantes.
Beautifully restored in 35mm Cinemascope, Max Ophüls’s Lola Montès (1955) dazzles with vibrant color and breathtaking camera movements in the epic tale of a 19th-century courtesan and showgirl who becomes the main attraction at a circus. Jacques Gamblin stars in The Color of Lies, Claude Chabrol’s masterful thriller about an artist who becomes the prime suspect in the brutal murder of a young girl, as an investigation exposes the inner workings of a small town.
Jean-Pierre Melville directs and stars in Two Men in Manhattan, a jazz-infused love letter to American culture featuring gorgeous black-and- white cinematography. The atmospheric noir melodrama follows a France-Presse correspondent and his hard- drinking photographer colleague as they attempt to track down a missing U.N. delegate. The digitally remastered version is shown in its New York premiere.
Following its 1988 premiere at Cannes, Claire Denis’ effortlessly assured debut feature Chocolat became an instant classic. Denis draws on her own childhood in this lush, powerful meditation on race and desire in colonial Africa, presented in a new 35mm print. The final film in the series, an Academy Award nominee and winner of the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, Henri-Georges Clouzot’s La vérité (The Truth) stars Brigitte Bardot in arguably the greatest performance of her career, as a free-spirited bohemian accused of murdering her lover.
