Thaïs by Anton Giulio Bragaglia

Presented by

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

In conjunction with Italian Futurism, 1909–1944: Reconstructing the Universe, the Guggenheim is pleased to screen Anton Giulio Bragaglia’s 1916 film Thaïs. While many Futurist artists shied away from technological media, Anton Giulio Bragaglia made important advancements in the field of photography and directed the feature film Thaïs in 1916. A classic Italian “diva film,” Thaïs follows a Slavic countess and seductress of the same name. Out of regret for seducing her best friend’s husband, Thaïs commits suicide in a dramatic final scene in which her body is crushed by the sharp, geometric set designed by Futurist artist Enrico Prampolini. From the collection of George Eastman House.
