- Is Bad Landlording a Crime?
Sister to a 'Worst Landlord'
Barry Goldstein

It takes a lot of courage and integrity for Dr. Neustein to speak out in this public way against the harmful practices of her brother. I admire her courage in doing so. In many ways our society has its priorities wrong in terms of what we treat as important. If her brother received parking tickets and failed to pay them, there would be a serious follow-up. Fines would be increased and eventually his car might be booted and he could not renew his license or registration. Creating unsafe and unhealthy conditions for tenants is a far more serious issue. Obviously it severely impacts the lives of thes victims, but it really harms the rest of us also. Many children growing up with these obstacles will not reach their potential and some will act out in school interfering with everyone's education. I think it is particularly upsetting that landlord groups that actively lobby for reduced regulation and higher rents do not seek enforcement against unscrupulous landlords. With rights should come responsibilities.
