Since Sept. 11,2001—a day when the New York City Fire Department lost 343 members—11 New York City firefighters have died fighting fires. The September/October issue of City Limits magazines examines at these deaths, and others over the past two decades, finding common factors and tracking efforts to address them.
On November 23, 2008, FDNY Lt. Robert Ryan lost his life at a fire on Van Buren Street on the North Shore of Staten Island. He was overcome by smoke in this attic, shown here in a photograph taken by FDNY investigators.
