From the struggle over religious tolerance in Dutch New York, to the taxpayer backlash of the 1970s, to today's push for bike lanes as an alternative to fossil-fueled transportation, New York City has often been a focal point for movements to change laws and life in America.
In a new exhibit called "Activist New York", the Museum of the City of New York looks at art and artifacts from 14 movements the city has witnessed during its history.
The 1910 photograph at left, by the Bain News Service and held by the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Divisionm shows two women strikers from the Ladies Tailors union on the picket line during the "Uprising of the 20,000" garment workers strike.
The exhibit opens May 4 and runs through 2012.
