Other submissions emphasize economy of space. Pod-like structures, reminiscent of sleeping chambers in a science fiction space station—or, as one judge put it, a “very nice Middle Eastern hillside village”—could be attached to form small colonies. In this finalist’s design, a series of interconnected hexagonal residences can be quickly constructed on almost any terrain. With built-in components, these homes are ready to live in.
