New York's main intercity train hub, Penn Station, is not only a key stop for Amtrak trains serving the northeast corridor, but also a terminus for New Jersey Transit and Long Island Railroad. The crowded conditions from all those intersecting commuter lines are inhibiting Amtrak's plans to increase speed on the key Washington-to-Boston route. After years of talk, work is underway at the old Farley Post Office across the street from Penn Station—the first step toward creating a more efficient and attractive rail portal in the city. But the full project is not yet funded, and a federal role is essential.
