The Tappan Zee Bridge has shown "significant deterioration" over the past 20 years and, thanks to flaws in its design, has an accident rate twice as high as the rest of the New York State Thruway System and is vulnerable to storms, ship collisions and earthquakes, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. But while transit advocates hoped the renovation of the bridge would include infrastructure for mass transit, the Cuomo administration has requested federal approval for replacement bridge that would only serve automobiles.
