Rivera, a fixture at Bronx political events with his trademark baseball cap and videocamera, was the chairman of the Bronx Democratic organization from 2000 to 2008. His son Joel was the youngest person ever elected to the City Council, where he still serves. His daughter Naomi Rivera represents a Bronx neighborhood in the state assembly but was voted out this fall, losing to an Albanian candidate.
