The Bronx is more than half Latino and has long been the community's political stronghold. Herman Badillo and Fernando Ferrer, two Latinos who came close to winning City Hall, served as borough president. Two potential future mayors also have served as borough president: Adolfo Carrión was Ferrer's successor and Ruben Diaz Jr., the incumbent, followed Carrión.
