Galleries for 19th- and Early 20th-Century European Paintings and Sculpture

Presented by Metropolitan Museum of Art

The galleries for nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European paintings and sculpture reopened in 2007 with renovated rooms and 8,000 square feet of additional gallery space--the Henry J. Heinz II Galleries--to showcase works from 1800 through the early twentieth century, including many works that were not previously on view. The renovated galleries feature all of the Museum's most loved nineteenth-century paintings, which have been on permanent display in the past, as well as works by Bonnard, Vuillard, Soutine, Matisse, Picasso, and other early modern artists. Among the many additions are: a full-room assembly of 'The Wisteria Dining Room,' a French art nouveau interior designed by Lucien Lévy Dhurmer shortly before World War I that is the only complete example of its kind in the United States; Henry Lerolle's enormous 'The Organ Rehearsal' (a church interior of 1885); a group of newly accessioned nineteenth-century landscape oil sketches; and a selection of rarely exhibited paintings by an international group of artists.

New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia

Presented by Metropolitan Museum of Art

On November 1, 2011, the Museum opened a suite of fifteen dramatic 'New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia.' The greatly enlarged, freshly conceived, and completely renovated galleries house the Metropolitan's renowned collection of Islamic art--one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of this material in the world. Design features within the new space highlight both the diversity and the interconnectedness of the numerous cultures represented here; multiple entryways allow visitors to approach the new galleries--and the art displayed within--from different perspectives. In sequence, the fifteen new galleries trace the course of Islamic civilization over a span of thirteen centuries, from the Middle East to North Africa, Europe, and Central and South Asia.

Presented by Museum of the City of New York

'Making Room: New Models for Housing New Yorkers' showcases innovative design solutions to better accommodate New York City's changing, and sometimes surprising, demographics, including a rising number of single people, and will feature a full-sized, flexibly furnished micro-studio apartment of just 325 square feet - a size prohibited in most areas of the city. Visitors to the exhibition will see models and drawings of housing designs by architectural teams commissioned in 2011 by Citizens Housing & Planning Council, in partnership with the Architectural League of New York. The exhibition also presents winning designs from the Bloomberg administration's recently launched pilot competition to test new housing models, as well as examples set by other cities in the United States and around the world, including Seattle, Providence, Montreal, San Diego, and Tokyo.
