Spies in the House of Art: Photography, Film and Video
Presented by Metropolitan Museum of Art
Since the 1980s, a number of contemporary artists working in photography, film, and video have taken as their subject the art museum and how we view specific works from the canon of art history. 'Spies in the House of Art: Photography, Film, and Video' draws largely from the Museum's collection to focus on artists from the last three decades who explore the secret lives of museums. This installation in the Joyce and Robert Menschel Hall for Modern Photography features 17 works, half of which have never been shown before at the Metropolitan.

Naked Before the Camera
Presented by Metropolitan Museum of Art
Depicting the human body has been among the greatest challenges, preoccupations and supreme achievements of artists for centuries. The nude (even in generalized or idealized renderings) has triggered impassioned discussions about sin, sexuality, cultural identity and canons of beauty, especially when the chosen medium is photography, with its inherent accuracy and specificity. This exhibition of over 60 photographs selected from the renowned holdings of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, surveys the history of this subject and explores some of the motivations and meanings that underlie photographers' fascination with the nude.

Rylands Haggadah: Medieval Jewish Art in Context
Presented by Metropolitan Museum of Art
A lavishly illustrated 14th-century Catalonian haggadah from the collection of the John Rylands University Library of Manchester, England, will be displayed in the Gallery for Western European Art from 1050 to 1300. A haggadah is the book used at the Passover seder, the ritual meal that commemorates the exodus of the ancient Israelites from Egypt. Works of art from the Museum's own collection, made for Christian use, but depicting the saga of the Hebrew people, will suggest the larger, medieval context of biblical storytelling in which the Haggadah was created. Images in the Rylands Haggadah depict episodes from the exodus from Egypt--such as the well-known Biblical stories of the ten plagues and the parting of the Red Sea--and also depict medieval Catalonian preparations for the seder. Each month, the Haggadah will be open to a different page, affording visitors the exceptional opportunity to follow the artist's telling of the Exodus story.

The Greatest Grid: The Master Plan of Manhattan, 1811-2011
Presented by Museum of the City of New York
This exhibition celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, the foundational document that established Manhattan's famous street grid. Featuring an original hand-drawn map of New York's planned streets and avenues prepared by the Commission in 1811, as well as other rare historic maps, photographs and prints of the evolution of the city's streets, and original manuscripts and publications that document the city's physical growth, the exhibition examines the grid's initial design, implementation, and evolution. 'The Greatest Grid' traces the enduring influence of the 1811 plan as the grid has become a defining feature of the city, shaping its institutions and public life.

Stories the City Tells Itself: The Video Art and Photography of Neil Goldberg
Presented by Museum of the City of New York
'Stories the City Tells Itself' is the first-ever exhibition of contemporary video art at the Museum of the City of New York. The exhibition presents nine video artworks and three photographic projects that capture the unexpected power and resonance of everyday moments in New York City. Neil Goldberg's videos and photographs direct the viewer's attention to activities that are usually experienced only fleetingly. Taken together, they produce a sweeping, dynamic, and generous portrait of the city and its people.

Jedediah Caesar: / ALBATROSS / BADGERS / CHIMPS / DINO / EMPIRE ...
Presented by D'Amelio Gallery (formerly D'Amelio Terras)
Since receiving his BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1998, Los Angeles-based artist Jedediah Caesar has gained international recognition for sculptures that amass found materials into systems that reveal new patterns, composed as wall installations that cling to architecture or freestanding sculptures. In this exhibition, Caesar presents three related yet distinct groups of works: A group of platforms hold massive coins whose currency is formed in California, Massachusetts and New York State. A film plays continuously in the bottom margins of the space. It follows a trip from the city to the desert and back again.
