Keith Michael’s Nutcracker 1-Hour Ballet Perfect for Children
Presented by New York Theatre Ballet
New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB) returns
for a second season of Keith Michael’s
Nutcracker, an enchanting holiday
ballet. This one-hour ballet is perfect
for children ages 3-10, with clever
choreography sophisticated enough
for the most discerning parent.
Opening night at New York City’s
Florence Gould Hall will be December
7 at 4:30 p.m., with additional shows
on December 8, 9, 15, 16, and 22 (see
schedule below).
This classic retelling of the Nutcracker
begins on Christmas Eve with
toymaker Drosselmeyer’s arrival
carrying an endearing nutcracker doll,
and includes a lively mouse queen with
a 18-foot-tail, a journey through the
Land of Snow and, of course, a sweet
romance between a young woman and
her nutcracker prince. From clockwork
imps to a luminous owl that flies
above the audience, mice dressed in
polka dots and dancers dancing with
huge chopsticks, this timeless re-
imagined classic bursts with energy
and excitement. This holiday classic,
set to music by Tchaikovsky is set in
Art Nouveau style circa 1907 featuring
innovative choreography by long-time
NYTB choreographer, Keith Michael,
set design by Gillian Bradshaw-Smith,
and costumes by Resident Costume
Designer of the Metropolitan Opera,
Sylvia Nolan.
The New York Observer’s dance critic
Robert Gottlieb calls Nutcracker…“an
hour-plus mini-ballet intended
primarily for little kids but equally
enchanting for ancients like me. It’s
completely ingenious the way he
deploys the pretty cut-out scenery and
the equally charming costumes. The
choreography is musical and inventive
and fun…Don’t forget this one at
Nutcracker time.”
