New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia
Presented by Metropolitan Museum of Art
On November 1, 2011, the Museum opened a suite of fifteen dramatic 'New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia.' The greatly enlarged, freshly conceived, and completely renovated galleries house the Metropolitan's renowned collection of Islamic art--one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of this material in the world. Design features within the new space highlight both the diversity and the interconnectedness of the numerous cultures represented here; multiple entryways allow visitors to approach the new galleries--and the art displayed within--from different perspectives. In sequence, the fifteen new galleries trace the course of Islamic civilization over a span of thirteen centuries, from the Middle East to North Africa, Europe, and Central and South Asia.

Jay DeFeo: A Retrospective
Presented by Whitney Museum of American Art
This retrospective is the definitive exhibition to date of the work of Jay DeFeo (1929-89). At the outset of her career in the 1950s, DeFeo was at the center of a vibrant community of Beat artists, poets, and musicians in San Francisco. Although she is best known for her monumental, almost two-thousand-pound painting 'The Rose,' which she spent eight years making and which later languished hidden behind a wall for two decades, DeFeo created an astoundingly diverse range of works spanning four decades. Her unconventional approach to materials and intensive, physical process make DeFeo a unique figure in postwar American art who defies easy categorization. The full breadth of her work will be presented for the first time in this exhibition of more than 130 objects. This array of collages, drawings, paintings, photographs, small sculptures, and jewelry will illuminate DeFeo's courageous experimentation and extraordinary vision.

Wait, Later This Will All Be Nothing: Dieter Roth Editions

The artistic practice of Dieter Roth (Swiss, b. Germany, 1930-1998) encompassed everything from painting and sculpture to film and video, but it is arguably through his editioned works--prints, books, and multiples--that he made his most radical contributions. These experiments include the use of organic materials in lieu of traditional mediums, including book-sausages filled with ground paper in place of meat, and multiples of plastic toys mired in melted chocolate, as well as a dazzling array of variations on printed postcards. 'Wait, Later This Will All Be Nothing: Dieter Roth Editions' focuses on Roth's innovative and prolific period from 1960 to 1975.

Henri Labrouste: Structure Brought to Light

'Henri Labrouste: Structure Brought to Light,' the first solo exhibition of Labrouste's work in the United States, establishes his work as a milestone in the modern evolution of architecture. The exhibition includes over 200 works, from original drawings--many of them watercolors of haunting beauty and precision--to vintage and modern photographs, films, architectural models, and fragments. Labrouste made an invaluable impact on 19th-century architecture through his exploration of new paradigms of space, materials, and luminosity in places of great public assembly.

TThe exhibition will feature rare collages by Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Ellsworth Kelly, Franz Kline, Al Leslie, Robert Motherwell, Ann Ryan, Kurt Schwitters, Frank Stella, Jack Youngerman, and others.
