After School Chess Master (Part-time)
Location: Bronx, NY Reports to: Director of Education and Youth Development
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Youth Services, the After School Chess Master will plan, organize, and implement a chess program for our advanced level chess students, with special attention to activities that will strengthen and enhance logic and reasoning skills, improve self-esteem, foster positive expression and the personal growth of program participants.
•Under the supervision of the Director of Education and Youth Services and working in conjunction with relevant staff and other supervisors, develop and implement a challenging advanced chess curriculum.
•Encourage and lead a chess program that fosters positive expression and builds self-esteem and personal growth.
•Assist in the planning of workshops and special events.
•Create lesson plans; select necessary supplies.
•Attend all necessary staff development training.
•Attend all required staff/planning meetings.
•Take on special assignments, as needed, which pertain to the goals and objectives of all of WHEDCo’s youth programs.
•Minimum two years professional experience working with children in a classroom, after school, or in a community based environment leading/organizing chess activities.
•Familiarity with the principals of chess instruction.
•Ability and willingness to work late afternons and/or evenings on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 4:00-5:00pm.
•Well organized, able to work both independently and collaboratively.
•Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
•Current, active college enrollment or college degree preferred.
•Previous work experience in low-income communities highly desirable.
