Disaster Relief & Recovery Coordinator
Cooper Square Committee
The Cooper Square Committee, a tenants rights and affordable housing preservation organization on the Lower East Side, is seeking a Social Worker to serve as a Disaster Relief and Recovery Coordinator (DRRC) to assist residents and buildings impacted by Superstorm Sandy.
The DRRC will work with our Greening Project Coordinator to do outreach to residents in more than 60 low income cooperatives, known as Housing Development Fund Corporations on the Lower East Side, mainly east of Avenue A. Staff will set up meetings with building managers and/or co-op board members to ascertain damage to the building systems (such as malfunctioning boilers due to flooding, mold that is still not remediated), and help link the co-ops to sources of assistance. We partner closely with other non-profits to enroll income-eligible buildings in the Weatherization Assistance Program and EmPower NY Program so they can access free and low cost building improvements.
The DRRC will also work with our Entitlements specialist to do some case management of individuals in a NORC (from 5th St. to Delancey St.) where 25% of households have a senior citizen household member. The DRRC will determine their needs, and develop realistic goals to assist them. A goal of this project is to empower seniors by organizing periodic workshops to educate them about resources available, including disaster preparedness information.
Applicant must keep case management notes on each client, and maintain files on buildings being assisted. Periodically attend staff development workshops to remain current with relevant laws and regulations and best practices. Applicant should have good case management and public speaking skills, ability to multi-task and juggle multiple projects, be detail oriented and well organized, and have an ability to interface with other organizations.
Salary: $40,000 plus health insurance
Licensed Social Worker strongly preferred, bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Chinese) preferred; we are seeking someone who is motivated and takes initiative. An interest in environmental greening work is helpful.
