Regional Plan Association

Public Engagement Manager

Regional Plan Association

Regional Plan Association is seeking a creative strategic thinker and communicator to generate awareness and support for RPA's Fourth Regional Plan with a wide range of constituents in the civic, business and government sectors.

RPA, a nonprofit urban-planning organization, focuses on the strategic government and business decisions that shape the New York-New Jersey- Connecticut region's overall wellbeing. In April 2013, RPA launched an initiative to create a Fourth Regional Plan for the metropolitan area - a blueprint for the region's growth, sustainability, good governance and economic opportunity for the next 25 years. The regional plan will require an ambitious public engagement effort to shape the plan's recommendations and build the network of constituents who will help carry them out over 25 years. The Public Engagement Manager will be responsible for designing and carrying out this engagement effort, with the support of other RPA staff.

Applicants should be dynamic, creative and strategic thinkers, and have six to eight years of work experience in communications and public engagement. The position requires initiative and the ability to balance multiple priorities. Excellent interpersonal skills and writing skills are essential. A knowledge of research, advocacy and community organizations in the tri-state area is preferred, as is proficiency of Salesforce or similar customer-relations management systems.

Responsibilities will include:

Building and supporting the Committee on the Fourth Regional Plan, a group of approximately 300 influential thought leaders from the civic and business sectors in planning and other fields. Members of the Committee will advise RPA on engagement, research and advocacy throughout the creation of the plan and beyond. Coordinating subcommittees and working groups around particular topic areas with RPA staff and members of the Committee on the Fourth Regional Plan. Organizing community workshops to discuss the plan with residents and workers in the region. Working with RPA’s Director of Public Affairs to craft messages and materials about the fourth plan.
