Transportation Alternatives, a New York City based nonprofit with a $3.6MM operating budget, seeks a highly motivated and experienced professional to serve as our Chief Operating Officer (COO). The COO partners with the Executive Director and Deputy Director in determining policy, setting strategic goals and addressing the full range of issues that arise, from daily management to long-term planning. The COO directly supervises a Senior Director of Technology and Information, a Finance Manager and an Operations Manager. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Transportation Alternatives has been growing steadily. The Board and Executive Director are looking for a mission-focused, strategic and process-minded leader with previous experience scaling an organization.

The COO will be accountable for ensuring that the programmatic, technological, financial, and physical operations of the organization are mission-aligned and performing at the highest levels of excellence.

•Serve as a liaison between the staff, the Executive Director and the Board of Directors
•Work with the Board of Directors: effectively communicate and present at Board of Directors and committee meetings
•Direct organizational strategy
•Direct how the organization allocates its financial and human resources
•Ensure strategic priorities are well-defined and translated into rigorous, executable and measurable plans
•Set and enforce organizational policies


•Strong operational experience; 5+ years of professional experience in a senior management role
•Significant experience leading and managing day-to-day operations in a complex setting
•Significant experience in project management
•Experience in financial planning and analysis with previous experience overseeing human resources and information technology
•Strong communication capabilities, including listening, writing, speaking, and presenting
•Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience preferred
•Experience working in advocacy a plus
