Part-time Sandy Foreclosure Counselor

Seeking a Homeownership Counselor to provide financial counseling to Hurricane Sandy-impacted homeowners. The counselor will assist with outreach efforts and will assist Sandy-impacted homeowners with traditional foreclosure prevention, as well as help with other resources to mitigate their financial distress.


•Foreclosure prevention counseling: Meet homeowners impacted by Hurricane Sandy to provide foreclosure prevention counseling, including assistance with loan modifications, mortgage refinancing, insurance and repair issues, or other programs and services to resolve their financial hardships.
•Case management: Maintain a caseload of 50-60 program participants, providing timely and pro-active follow-up and support.
•Data management: Record, maintain, and track counseling data using CounselorMax and/or other database tools.
•Outreach & marketing: Collaborate with FAC staff and other Sandy recovery partners to assist with outreach and marketing efforts, primarily in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Gowanus and Red Hook, but also in other under-served neighborhoods heavily impacted by Hurricane Sandy. This will include door-knocking, group presentations and workshops, mailings, networking, and other activities.
•Training and knowledge-building: Attend regular training sessions to stay abreast of post- Sandy recovery and resiliency programs and foreclosure prevention trends.
•Other duties as assigned.


•Bachelor’s degree required.
•One to two years of direct foreclosure prevention counseling experience strongly preferred.
•Experience in post-disaster counseling and case management a plus.
•Bi-lingual English/Spanish desired.
• Excellent computer skills; familiarity with CounselorMax preferred.
• Highly-organized self-starter able to multi-task.
•Committed, hardworking, and willing to put in the effort required to meet program deliverables.
•Able to engage with low and moderate income homeowners in a respectful manner.
•Excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills.
•Demonstrated patience and flexibility working with complex issues and crises.
•Able to work well on a team, as well as independently.
•Willingness and ability to work some evening and/or weekend hours.
•A sense of humor is appreciated.
•Strong commitment to FAC and NHN’s missions.

Compensation:Mid-to-high $30,000 range based on a four-day schedule.

This is currently a four-day (28 hours) per week position funded until December 31st, 2014. Position is available immediately.
