The South Bronx Early College Academy Charter School (Early College Academy) is a middle school, serving grades 6 through 8 in Community School District 7 of the South Bronx. The Early College Academy provides students with a rigorous and comprehensive liberal arts education through a challenging, New York State Common Core standards- aligned curriculum. The Early College Academy's learning environment emphasizes differentiation and personalization of instruction and a student- centered and fully inclusive approach to teaching and learning.

The Early College Academy will open in September 2015 for a cohort of 110 6th grade students, and will grow until it reaches capacity.

Job Summary:

The South Bronx Early College Academy Charter School Principal is responsible for the day-to-day management and instructional leadership of the school. The Principal is responsible for ensuring that the school adheres to its mission, that its goals and objectives are achieved, and that it is operationally and financially sound. As Founding Principal, he/she will be responsible for establishing the school culture described in the Early College Academy's Charter Agreement with the school's authorizer. The Principal will report directly to the Board of Trustees.

Responsibilities:

• Recruit, hire, manage, and develop the school’s leadership, instructional, operational, and support teams
• Oversee the design and implementation of curricula and the implementation of all instructional programs
• Guide instructional staff to improve teaching and learning by providing teacher support and professional development
• Ensure that systems are established to effectively measure student progress and achievement, and that instruction adapts as necessary to ensure that students are on track
• Teach or co-teach courses on a regular basis to establish a culture of shared professional engagement and foster productive communication with teachers about teaching and learning, based on shared classroom experiences
• Supervise the activities of partner organizations, including graduate students working under the direction of teachers in the classroom, to ensure that all partners are in compliance with their Partnership Agreements
• Work with instructional, guidance counselors, and social workers to manage student discipline and appropriately address behavioral issues
• Establish and maintain strong relationships with students, parents, and other community members
• Ensure that school-based operations are efficient and in compliance with the Early College Academy’s Charter Agreement
• Oversee the development and implementation of various forms of communication with families and other stakeholders
• Maintain positive relationships with the New York Department of Education and other charter organizations, serving as an active leader in the charter community, including sharing the Early College Academy’s best practices
• Report on activities, organizational development progress, and student achievement to the school’s Board of Trustees, New York State Education Department, and NYC Department of Education
• Work with Finance and Operations staff and/or consultants to draft and monitor the school’s budget and ensure daily financial and business activities are compliant with the school’s fiscal policies

Qualifications:

• Five or more years of demonstrated experience leading a successful district or charter public school, charter management organization, educational institution or similar nonprofit organization, serving economically disadvantaged or at-risk students
• Substantial experience in program development, instructional leadership, staff hiring and training, budget development and management, compliance reporting, fund development, staff management and human resources development and public relations
• Five or more years of classroom experience
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Board of Trustees, educators and diverse groups of school stakeholders and a successful track record of designing and implementing innovative educational programs
• Understanding of relevant laws, regulations and requirements affecting NYS charter schools and ability to work effectively with partner organizations and the authorizer
• Strong skills in strategic planning and implementation of school programs
• A Master’s degree in education, educational administration and/or a related field, as well as appropriate certifications
• Understanding of and commitment to the mission, programs and principles of the Early College Academy
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus
