The Associate Vice President for Advancement (AVP) provides dynamic leadership and direction for all aspects of Dickinson College's major giving program. With a creative, energetic approach to fundraising and constituent engagement, the AVP will help foster an atmosphere charged with enthusiasm and dynamism for institutional goals. Working in close collaboration with and reporting to the Vice President for College Advancement, he or she will guide and oversee corporate, foundation, planned, regional and individual major giving. Leading by example, he or she will effectively build and manage a portfolio of alumni, families, friends, organizations and corporations. Working in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President for Engagement and Annual Giving, he or she will create inventive engagement, cultivation, and stewardship strategies - designed to further the loyalty and engagement of the Dickinson College community and to encourage higher levels of support and involvement.

Directly supervises the major gift fundraising staff including major gift officers, regional directors of development, director of planned giving, director of career and corporate development and director of academic and foundation relations. Provides oversight for all aspects of major gift fundraising and strategically builds a fundraising staff that will meet the needs of a future comprehensive campaign.

Responsibilities:

• In close collaboration with the Vice President for College Advancement, proactively and systematically expand and diversify philanthropic revenue for the College
• With a dynamic and innovative approach, lead major gifts, foundation and corporate relations programs; maintain a work environment which encourages participation, promotes productivity, and utilizes clearly defined goals and methods with which to measure success.
• Lead the major gift fundraising team with knowledge, flexibility, and patience to improve overall fundraising performance and confidence
• Build strong collaborative relationships with Dickinson College leadership, faculty, staff, colleagues, volunteers, alumni, and other leaders and, in doing so, further the culture of philanthropy across the college
• Maintain a personal portfolio (50-75) of top donors and prospects: focus on the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations
• As appropriate, strategically engage college stakeholders in public outreach and fundraising activities, providing meaningful engagement opportunities and effective support
• Expand public outreach: design and implement strategies for reaching out to non-traditional prospective donor constituencies, including targeted philanthropists, foundations, and corporations
• In consultation with the Assistant Vice President for Advancement Services help create best practice opportunities for donor research, gift recording and reporting processes.
• Guide the preparation and submission of proposals for new and renewed support to major gift donors, including the review of all proposals submitted by the major gifts team;

Qualifications:
Professional confidence and proven ability to engage, motivate, and develop productive relationships with fundraising staff and diverse leaders and volunteers, faculty, donors, and other internal and external constituencies. Expected experience and skills include:
• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
• Proven ability to provide innovative fundraising leadership for major gifts, foundation and corporate relations and planned giving;
• Successful track record of building and maintaining a prospect portfolio and securing significant (five- seven-figure) gifts, including the ability to effectively identify, research, cultivate, solicit and steward donors;
• Ability to create and expand a constituency; demonstrated history of achieving fundraising goals for a staff-driven organization from both defined (alumni, parents, families) and non-defined (non-alumni) constituencies;
• Fundraising capacity building: a track record of scaling a fundraising operation, expanding the donor base, and migrating donors to higher giving levels, resulting in increased capacity and revenue growth;
• Inclusive management skills to direct a results-oriented team while maintaining best practices, camaraderie and shared accountability;
• Strong commitment to the College’s mission and the Liberal Arts.
• Ability to engage diverse constituents in a manner that generates excitement, shared purpose, meaningful action, and long-term relationships;
• Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and listening);
• Entrepreneurial instincts, intellectual curiosity, and an ability to work both independently and as a team member;
• Team player comfortable with ambiguity as decision-processes evolve over time, and the ability to quickly refine strategies after feedback from stakeholders;
