St. Nicks Alliance (SNA) is a nonprofit, nonsectarian community-based organization founded in 1975 with a mission to serve as a catalyst to improve the quality of life for Williamsburg- Greenpoint residents by addressing economic, educational, health, housing, and social needs while preserving the vibrant and diverse character of the entire community, particularly for low- and moderate-income residents. SNA serves primarily North Brooklyn with an array of programs in several sites, and with some program and services extending outside of North Brooklyn. Its programs encompass Elder Care, Workforce Development, Economic Development, Youth and Education programs, as well as Housing Programs and Services that started with real estate development and property management and now extend to related assistance programs. SNA has grown rapidly in recent years with a budget of $51M and a staff of 1,350 employees engaged in five strategic operating divisions - Housing, Healthcare, Workforce Development, Economic Development, and Youth, Families and Education.

The Director of Development will be responsible for SNA's fundraising strategy and will oversee its implementation which includes raising money from foundations, soliciting major gifts and corporate donations. In collaboration with the Executive Director, s/he will take the lead in developing strategies that positions SNA for greater sustainability. The Director of Development will have vision and entrepreneurial energy, as well as a keen eye for detail. S/he will bring leadership and vision to SNA's small development office combined with a hands-on approach, the ability to supervise others, as well as be part of a team. The Director of Development will bring innovative ideas for accessing new and unique funding streams for the organization. S/he will establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, particularly prospective foundations and corporate contributions and will appropriately leverage the knowledge, experience and expertise of all of St. Nicks Alliance's stakeholders to achieve the development goals of the organization. As a senior member of St. Nicks Alliance's staff, s/he will engage in and foster continuous learning and collaboration among colleagues.

Responsibilities:
Planning Development Strategies
• Collaborates with the Executive Director to develop an annual foundation and corporate development plan
• Implements the development plans in accordance with ethical fundraising principles
• Evaluates all fundraising activities to ensure goals are achieved
• Reviews and advises on available, appropriate government RFP’s and coordinates responses to RFP’s
• Monitors fundraising trends and adapts strategies as necessary

Organizing Development Activities
• Prepares foundation grant applications and builds relationship with those organizations
• Develops and manages a fundraising calendar to ensure strategic plans and critical fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner
• Facilitates ongoing fundraising efforts within the organization particularly among four operating directors
• Works closely with program and fiscal staff to prepare and submit grant applications
• Supports the planning and execution of special fundraising events as requested

Managing the Development Budget
• Works in collaboration with St. Nicks Alliance’s fiscal team to develop and gain approval for an annual development department budget
• Prepares regular grant, contract and management reports on progress, budgets, receipts and expenditures related to fundraising and the management of the development activities
• Monitors expenses and analyzes budget reports on fund development and recommends changes as necessary

Managing the Development Team
• In consultation with the Executive Director, recruit and manage well-qualified development staff as resources become available

Promoting the Organization
• Fosters an understanding of philanthropy within the organization
• Supports a comprehensive communication plan to promote the organization to its donors and maximizes public awareness of the fundraising activities of the organization
• Coordinates the design, printing and distribution of marketing and communication materials for development efforts
• Collaborates with colleagues to connect St. Nicks Alliance’s intellectual capital with marketing efforts
• Builds relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization
• Works with staff to create a St. Nicks Alliance’s presence among New York City decision makers

• Excellent Writing Skills -- Writes concisely and creatively, bringing home key messages to various audiences
• Effective Communication -- Speaks, listens and writes in a clear, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques
• Problem Solving and Teamwork -- Works cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and makes decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness
• Leadership -- Positively influences others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization
• Decision Making -- Assesses situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and makes clear decisions which are timely and in the best interest of the organization
• Planning and Organizing -- Sets priorities, develops a work schedule and monitors progress towards goals

Preferred:

• Bachelor's degree required (Master's degree preferred)
• Minimum of five years of development experience in a medium sized nonprofit organization
• Proven fundraising track record with individuals and major donors, foundations, corporations, government, and elected officials
• Demonstrated success in shaping, implementing and leading programs that have increased support from major donors, corporations and foundations
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with varied constituencies, including Board members, staff, prospective donors and institutional funders
• Working knowledge of New York City’s philanthropic, social and government organizational leadership
• Solid experience as a persuasive communicator with a keen eye for detail
• Strong management skills, including the ability to set priorities among multiple responsibilities
• Marketing experience a plus
