North Star Fund is New York's community foundation supporting grassroots groups leading the movement for equality, economic justice and peace. By inspiring donors to give and awarding grants for grassroots organizing and activism, North Star Fund is building a community of progressive leaders in a movement to achieve lasting social change. From affordable housing, to immigrant rights, to the rights of low-wage workers and women, our donors are moving resources where they're needed most - to the hands of community activists whose lives are directly impacted by injustice.
The Deputy Director of Resources and Strategy will lead North Star's development work on the heels of a highly successful capital campaign that raised $7.5 million for operations and growth. The ideal candidate will be a results-oriented strategist with excellent writing skills and a proven track record of major gift fundraising and team management. This position will report to and work closely with the Executive Director, and will supervise a five person development team of two staff and three consultant advisors.
Lead North Star's fundraising effort, including the creation and implementation of our multi-pronged development strategy and annual fundraising plan, in coordination with our communications strategy;
Manage the fundraising team and oversee operations and systems, including supporting the Executive Director and the Board to realize ambitious fundraising goals;
Manage and implement all aspects of our work with major donors ($5,000-$500,000) and mid- level donors ($500-$5,000), including research, prospecting, cultivation, and stewardship;
Craft compelling written materials that communicate to donors the impacts of giving, including mail and online appeals, grant proposals and reports, and thank you letters.
• Knowledge of and commitment to progressive social justice issues;
• Significant experience creating a compelling vision for fundraising and managing development operations at a nonprofit; experience with planned giving campaigns a plus;
• Ability to build strong relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders, including donors, grantees, and foundation partners; strong, persuasive communication skills and excellent writing skills;
• Strong management and supervisory skills, and ability to motivate a team;
• Able to meet deadlines, manage a project with many moving parts and sweat the details.
