Intake Interviewer

ESPERANZA

Description
Esperanza is an innovative juvenile justice program that seeks to reduce the number of youth placed in juvenile facilities. Working with the probation department and other city and state agencies, it is engineering structural changes to encourage the use of sanctions less restrictive than confinement. The project also delivers a home-based, community-focused sentencing option for youth who would otherwise be placed outside their homes. Esperanza works with youth and their families in their own homes and communities, providing direct counseling services, helping to set short- and long-term goals, and facilitating connections to schools and other community-based organizations to assist youth and caregivers in establishing longer-term supportive networks.

Esperanza is seeking an Intake Interviewer to conduct interviews with adolescents and parents as part of the program's intake process. These interviews are viewed as the beginning of the engagement process with potential clients, and the information that is gathered is utilized to determine whether the youths are appropriate candidates for Esperanza. Intake Interviewers are also charged with using the information gathered from these interviews to write court reports and acceptance letters for potential clients and providing testimony in court hearings. Facilitating relations with other parties involved with the court process, including defense lawyers, prosecutors, Probation Officers, and detention facility staff, is also required. As all the services of Esperanza are provided almost exclusively in the participants' communities, at times convenient for clients and their families, intake interviewers are expected to travel extensively throughout the city and need to be able to accommodate varying schedules. Travel to detention facilities and family courts throughout the five boroughs in New York City using public transportation are also required.
