Description
The Retail Action Project (RAP) is seeking a Membership Organizer to build a broad-based membership of retail workers.
RAP is a membership organization of retail workers dedicated to improving the wages and working conditions in the retail industry. RAP began as a community-labor partnership in 2005 and is now expanding into a membership organization partnered with the Retail, Wholesale, Department Store Union (RWDSU/UFCW). RAP aims to empower retail workers, raise industry standards and challenge injustices in the industry. We engage in campaigns, policy solutions, services, education, and cultural/media communications.
Description of Duties:
? Develop and implement a membership recruitment plan that targets non-food retail workers. Strategies would include training member organizers, in-person/store outreach, online organizing, advertising, and organizational networking.
? Initiate and lead organizing, strategic public education and corporate accountability campaigns.
? Develop the leadership of members to engage in strategic industry campaigns.
? Assist with the development of the membership organizational structure, including the coordination of the membership leadership board.
? Coordinate and organize membership involvement in committees, campaigns and general organizational efforts.
? Organize membership meetings, workplace justice actions and other campaigns, membership recruitment or organizational events.
? Work with RWDSU staff to promote RAP membership and enrollment in services and benefits.
? Build and coordinate the RAP community coalition and other community allies to support organizing efforts.
? Work with RAP staff team carry out administrative duties, including the possible implementation of a dues deduction system.
Qualifications:
? Experience in worker organizing or in membership-based community organizing
? Ability to develop strategies to grow a vibrant, democratic membership organization
? Strong writing, communication & listening skills
? Experience initiating and leading organizing or policy campaigns
? Flexible, creative, self-motivated, able to work independently and handle multiple tasks and projects
? Ability to assess effectiveness of strategies and make adjustments as needed
? Demonstrated ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of people
? Willingness to work long, irregular, evening or weekends as needed.
? Experience with online organizing strategies desired.
