Description
Community Resource Exchange is a nonprofit consulting organization that provides a range of consulting services to New York City-based nonprofits, including executive search. CRE's client is a Brooklyn-based multi-entity community development organization with a budget of $12 million and is seeking candidates for a leadership position in a fast-paced accounting department.
Position
The Director of Accounting & Financial Reporting reports to the Chief Financial Officer & Executive Vice President and has hands-on responsibility for all aspects of the day-to-day accounting functions and ensuring that correct accounting practices (US GAAP) are implemented and followed.
Duties
- Hands-on responsibility for planning, directing and administering the day-to-day accounting functions and supervising of accounting staff.
- Responsible for planning and directing all ledger accounting, including timely and accurate general ledger accounting, intercompany, interfunds, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processing.
- Responsible for the timely month-end closing process, including bank reconciliations, accruals, deferrals, and prepaids; the proper timing and recognition of revenue and expenses
- Serves as a key contact with external auditors and manages and ensures that the annual audit process is completed on a timely; investigates, and resolves open audit items and provides responses to questions and issues as they arise; prepares schedule of functional expenses and performances analysis on comparative balance sheets and income statements and provides detailed explanations for major account variances.
- Responsible for the timely preparation of accurate, complete and reliable, financial statements; ensures audited financial statements and notes to the financial statements are accurately prepared, including eliminating entries, consolidating worksheets and consolidated statements; ensures A-133 reports are accurately prepared including Federal Awards Schedule; reviews and analysis financial statements to ensure that the results are accurate and reliable.
- Ensures that the accounting practices and procedures are in-line with US GAAP; ensures that established internal controls guidelines are adhered to and maintain an effective internal control framework around all accounting activities to ensure that the assets of the organization are adequately safeguarded.
- Ensures maximization of accounting software in its design and utilization to optimize the contractual, funding, board, and internal reporting needs of the organization.
- Develops and maintains a structured accounting department that clearly delineates the functions and tasks of each staff member in achieving the objectives of the department; leads an engaged accounting team to effectively deliver the outcomes of the accounting functions; and maintains a high-functioning, crossed-trained, and motivated accounting team.
Minimum Skills Set
Self-directed, solutions-oriented, multi-tasker, with strong communications and organizational skills; ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines; adept at managing peak work periods and changing circumstances; tenacious in meeting deadlines and willingness to work late and on weekends, if necessary, to meet reporting and audit deadlines; ability to work collaboratively across departments and be responsive to internal and external inquiries.
Experience & Qualification Requirements
- A minimum of 10 to 15 years progressive accounting management experience, with at least 8 years in the capacity of director of accounting or similar position, with a nonprofit and/or governmental agency with a $12 million plus operating budget.
- Masters in Accounting or Bachelors in Accounting and Masters in Business or Finance required. CPA strongly desired; Experience in preparing GAAP financial statements, notes to the financial statements, and consolidations; Experience in preparing A-133 reports and Federal Awards schedule
- Experience with computerized accounting software, including Financial Edge, and MS office. Expertise with Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint.
