About Organization:
Founded in 1844, the Correctional Association of New York is an independent non-profit organization that advocates for a more humane and effective criminal justice system and a more just and equitable society. One of the leading criminal justice reform organizations in the country, the CA is unique in its mission, vision and impact. In 1846, the CA was granted authority by New York State Legislature to inspect prisons and to report its findings and recommendations to the public. We are the only such organization in New York—one of only two in the country—and we are the only one that advocates for systemic change.
Utilizing a strategic model of research, policy analysis, prison-monitoring, coalition-building, leadership-development and advocacy, the CA is an innovative and effective force for progressive change. Our three projects—Juvenile Justice, Prison Visiting, and Women in Prison—work to stop the ineffective use of incarceration to address social problems; advocate for humane prison conditions; empower people directly affected by incarceration to become leaders; and promote transparency and accountability in our justice systems.
