Director of Strategic Communications ~ SEIU 32BJ
With more than 125,000 members in ten districts, SEIU 32BJ is the largest property service workers union in the country, representing security officers; doormen, porters, and maintenance workers; bus drivers and aides; and window cleaners and food service workers. Affiliated with the Service Employees International Union, two million members strong, 32BJ carries forth the mission of upholding the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide.
Recognized for its powerful work, 32BJ has doubled in size over the past ten years and expanded its geographic reach, ensuring better conditions for more workers and a brighter future for their families. In order to continue winning strong contracts and expanding member leadership, 32BJ needs to carry forth that fight with a united message that is pushed throughout its membership internally and amongst its partners externally during contract fights, organizing drives, and legislative and political campaigns, and now seeks a Director of Strategic Communications who will play a key role in shaping the strategy that delivers this message.
Key to success in this role will be a track record of creating and implementing broad reaching, multi-pronged communications strategies that drive unified messages throughout diverse audiences and geographic regions as a way of driving change and impacting social movements. The Director will deliver compelling and targeted messaging to employers, legislators, local and national media, and the public through a variety of mediums including print, online and events. S/he will utilize the union's strongest asset - the personal experiences of members and workers - to tell the union's story, channeling member voices into clear, motivating and sophisticated communications strategies that advance the interests of 32BJ.
Reporting directly to the Assistant to the President for Communications and managing a staff of six to eight regional communicators, the Director will be responsible for all external communications, positioning the union as a whole while adapting to the unique communications needs of each geography and district; drafting communications for priority campaigns; and developing relationships with key reporters and editors to leverage the union's opportunities in various media markets.
Leading candidates will have demonstrated achievement in devising strategic communications plans and media relations programs, as well as significant experience cultivating successful relationships with the media nationally and on Capitol Hill. S/he ideally is familiar with the legislative process and federal, state, and local public policy issues, specifically those affecting low-wage workers, the immigrant community, and the working class population. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required as well as exceptional detail orientation; adeptness in managing to multiple deadlines and fast-changing priorities; and an aptitude for capturing in writing the voice of the working class.
A bachelor's degree, preferably in communications or a relevant field, is required along with eight years of communications or campaign management experience in labor, advocacy, social justice, or related work. The selected candidate will bring experience in strategic communications planning; success as a project manager in a fast-paced, campaign-oriented work environment; knowledge of effective social media tactics; and a familiarity and obvious commitment to social and economic justice and issues related to working families.
