The SFNY Educator Outreach Director reports to the SFNY Executive Director and serves on the organization's senior leadership team.  The Educator Outreach Director will manage and expand relationships with educators; provide an educator perspective in shaping SFNY's local policy agenda; prepare recommendations to the senior staff regarding all aspects of the most ambitious, strategic, and aggressive education policy reform agenda in the country; and drive the development of new advocacy and policy projects.

Responsibilities:

• Manage the development of relationships with mission-aligned educators, schools and districts across the state with particular emphasis on New York City,with the following goals in mind: o Engaging a broad network of voices to advocate for state and district policies in support of SFNY’s platform. o Collecting promising best practices to share and promote. o Identifying key obstacles and issues that impede student support and achievement.
• Collaborate with SFNY senior leadership to provide educator perspective in shaping our policy agenda, outreach and advocacy strategy, and the criteria by which we measure our success.
• Design and launch a statewide educator policy fellowship program; recruit a team to administer and lead the program; select a cohort of 10-25 experienced and highly effective educators to participate; supervise, assess, and revise the program for the following year.
• Develop a framework for identifying and exploring educator concerns; lead the process for developing new solutions to educator challenges; and maintain relentless focus on creating and enabling policy practices that prioritize equity, opportunity, and student achievement.
• Serve as a key spokesperson for SFNY – drafting and publishing/delivering speeches, presentations, letters, editorials, blog posts; participate in social media; and connect educator fellows, members, and families to opportunities to advocate, speak, and write in support of our agenda.
• Supervise the delivery of high- quality, targeted training and development to a variety of audiences (including fellows, members, families, and students) with the goal of preparing them to speak and advocate on behalf of education reform.
• Direct the planning of SFNY educator-related events (advocacy trainings, panel discussions, social events, policy forums, speaker series), connecting educator members with key local and state policymakers.

Preferred:
Education/Experience
• At least 7 years experience working in education – at minimum as an educator; ideally also in policy, research, and data analysis.
• Broad knowledge and understanding of education policy issues at the district and state levels in New York; command of effective research practices and techniques and common education data resources; and an exceptional ability to cultivate and develop relationships and networks, especially around education issues.
• Ability to clearly communicate – in writing and in conversation – complex policy and legislative issues to audiences and constituents of diverse backgrounds, including internal employees and external constituencies.
• Masters Degree or higher in Education, Education Policy, Political Science, Public Policy, or in a related field.
• Experience desirable but not required with any of the following: Mobilizing volunteers, canvassing for issue or political campaigns or event planning.

• Ability to lead and produce deliverables with a lean and nimble team
• Ability to work independently and as a key member of multiple small project teams
• A proven track record showing an ability to motivate and influence others and connect with communities
• Superior interpersonal and problem- solving skills
• Must be willing and able to work and travel irregular hours (weekend and evenings may be required).
• Ability to speak and/or write in Spanish preferred.
