As a member of the State Office management team, you will work to ensure AARP is seen as a visible force in the state. You will develop and implement activities related to priorities in the state including community service programs, personal enrichment events and education/learning activities with a focus on various consumer health and/or economic security issues, advocacy, and other campaigns. You will also recruit, train, and orient volunteers; conduct volunteer recognition activities; develop effective partnerships with community organizations, and businesses and maintain visible statewide coalitions dealing with community service strategic issues.
Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for staffing, orienting, coaching, managing and evaluating staff. Develops and monitors work plans for and with staff. Manages and documents staff performance and takes corrective action when necessary. Ensures that policies and procedures are carried out appropriately. Identifies training/development needs of staff. 2. Plans, develops, and implements comprehensive statewide outreach plans to achieve AARP’s portfolio and engagement priorities in the state. Serves as a member of the state office management team, assisting the State Director in establishing overall priorities and strategic direction for the state. Provides strategic direction and leads the planning process for member outreach, issue education, grassroots organizing, and community development in assigned area. Oversees specific activities to engage corporate and nonprofit entities in select areas. Coordinates with state and national internal and external partners to deliver on AARP Florida objectives. 3. Provides leadership to the outreach team and key volunteers in the development of strategies for issue campaigns to reach desired outcomes within the state. Makes budget requests and allocation recommendations to the State Director. Assists in the development of the state operational and financial plans. Responsible for creating and assuring oversight of budgets for issue campaigns. Provides supervision and direction and leads a staff directly and through matrix management in grassroots campaigns to support federal and state advocacy and outreach campaigns to deliver portfolio objectives. 4. Coordinates planning, reporting, budget and forecasting processes for outreach team, contributing to overall statewide process management, Identifies ways to streamline and efficiently manage ongoing and iterative processes. 5. Provides overall management of volunteer support across the state. Manages team of staff and volunteers to plan and conduct community-based activities in partnership with local volunteer leaders. Oversees statewide recruitment, development, and deployment of tenured and episodic volunteers. Works with other staff and volunteer leaders to ensure that appropriate support is given to recruitment, orientation, training, structures, and creation of volunteer assignments to match AARP’s priority activities. Leads, guides, and coaches assigned staff in the implementation of AARP’s strategic activities. Ensures that appropriate levels of advocacy education and deployment are taking place at the community level with volunteers and with members in general. 6. Supports team of staff and volunteers as a resource for identifying policy expertise, information, educational capabilities and other resources within the national office to support work in Florida communities. 7. Ensures AARP state office staff and volunteer structure and activities engage the full diversity of Florida’s 50+ population. 8. Represents AARP New York as a spokesperson on issues in meeting with elected officials, community leaders, and public groups.
Qualifications:
Requires completion of a bachelor’s degree in management, political science, public policy administration, law, business, social or human sciences, or a related discipline and 5-7 years of experience, including supervision and management of staff and/or volunteers; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position. Must have a strong understanding of the state’s political and community service environments (e.g., community service leaders, partners, organizations, legislative leaders, government officials, major stakeholders, etc.). Previous success in leading a team and working in multi-cultural communities strongly preferred. Advanced degree very desirable. Local and in-state travel required up to 50% of work time.
