Academic Director


StreetSquash aims to help each child realize his or her academic and personal potential through long-term, rigorous programming in academic tutoring, squash instruction, college prep, literacy enrichment, community service, and one-on-one mentoring. Serving 180 Harlem public school students in grades 6-12, StreetSquash boasts a 100% high school graduation and college matriculation rate as well as a college completion rate of over 80%. Through high expectations and strong support, we help our students to achieve greatness.

StreetSquash is seeking a driven, innovative Academic Director with a passion for supporting young people and putting them on the path to achieving their higher education goals. This position will begin July 29 and will report to the Program Director.

Facilitate daily after-school homework and academic support sessions for two grades of 30 students, managing volunteers and tutors, and assisting individual students

Meet weekly with teachers to assess students' progress and communicate regularly with parents, guidance counselors, and others in each student's support system

Work closely with squash director to meet the needs of your teams, including performing home visits, planning team trips and cultural outings, organizing community service activities, facilitating team-building workshops, etc.

Develop and implement standardized test preparation Network with other organizations and external services to refer students and families as necessary

Work closely with academic team to coordinate programming and supervise part-time afterschool staff

Collaborate on program-wide initiatives and projects

Support students in their academic and personal growth through programming and relationship-building

Significant experience writing and implementing curriculum targeted toward middle and high school students

Excellent writing, research and computer skills

Project management, interpersonal, organizational and networking skills critical

Supervisory experience a plus

Sensitivity to different cultures and communities

Sense of humor and significant experience working with adolescents

Knowledge of NY State high school and higher education systems a plus

Valid NYS driver's license, comfort and capacity to occasionally drive vans

Must be able to work some weekends

Conversational spoken Spanish preferred
