Help Build Healthy Lives in your Community: Train to become a Substance Abuse Counselor

Earn your Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) Diploma

What is a substance abuse counselor?

A substance abuse counselor works with individuals and families to help them overcome their struggles stemming from alcohol and substance abuse. Substance abuse is a demanding, yet rewarding, field of human services that continues to be one of the fastest growing careers. Substance abuse counselors work with many populations (adults, women, adolescents) in a variety of possible settings (outpatient clinic, residential program, hospital, juvenile detention, etc.)

New York State regulations require a minimum of 350 hours of education and training which address the full range of knowledge, skills, and professional techniques related to chemical dependence counseling in order to become a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). Minimum qualifications to apply to become a CASAC: you must be at least 18 years of age, have at least a high school diploma or GED, and reside in New York State at least 51% of the time to be issued a credential.
