What is a substance abuse counselor?
A substance abuse counselor works with individuals and families to help them overcome their struggles stemming from alcohol and substance abuse. Substance abuse is a demanding, yet rewarding, field of human services that continues to be one of the fastest growing careers. Substance abuse counselors work with many populations (adults, women, adolescents) in a variety of possible settings (outpatient clinic, residential program, hospital, juvenile detention, etc.)
New York State regulations require a minimum of 350 hours of education and training which address the full range of knowledge, skills, and professional techniques related to chemical dependence counseling in order to become a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). Minimum qualifications to apply to become a CASAC: you must be at least 18 years of age, have at least a high school diploma or GED, and reside in New York State at least 51% of the time to be issued a credential. Outreach Training Institute has been a leader in providing high-quality training opportunities on substance abuse for over 25 years. Approved by the New York State Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), the Training Institute specializes in providing the 350-hour Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) Diploma program. Our program offers:
350 hours of: instructional training in classroom environments and hands-on training in small groups to give you real-world clinical experience Job Preparation, Placement Assistance, and Internships to prepare your commitment to working in the field High-quality trainers with years of training and clinical experience in the field We offer two tracks: an 11-month (9 hours a week) track and an accelerated 5- month (18 hours a week) track to best accomodate your timing needs Fully-equipped, state of the art training sites in three campus locations, to provide an optimal learning environment Admissions occur on a rolling basis, with openings every 4-6 weeks, so call anytime for information or visit www.opiny.org
The tuition cost is $4450, payable monthly throughout the course of the program. We also offer financial aid and an array of income- and merit-based scholarships, if you qualify.
