International Youth Day 2010!
Directions For Our Youth
DFOY has sponsored this worldwide event in partnership with the United Nations and the NYC Parks Department for the past six years.
The United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in 1999, that August 12th be declared International Youth Day. They suggested that public information activities be organized to support the Day as a way to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth.
International Youth Day is the world's first global holiday, a time to celebrate youth with music, dance, poetry, art and sports. It is also a time to acknowledge the problems faced by youth in employment, education, health, peace and justice. The first International Youth Day was held on August 12th, 2000. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding an endangered demographic.
Each year we gather over 2,000 youth for a day filled with fun activities, music, and performances. This allows us to promote peace and cultural understanding among NYC youth and their counterparts around the world.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming the year commencing on August 12th, 2010 through August 12th, 2011 as the International Year of Youth. This year's theme is Dialogue and Mutual Understanding. The central focus is Communications. This will allow our youth to learn and understand all the different types and medians of communication.
The year will coincide with the 25th Anniversary of the first International Youth Year in 1985 on the theme Participation, Development and Peace.
