A look at precinct-by-precinct crime statistics shows that the uptick in crime—at least in murder, the most closely tracked crime—is not occurring evenly across the boroughs or the 76 precincts.
In his weekly radio address on Sunday, Mayor Bloomberg said, "Nothing is more important to our quality of life than public safety." He alluded only vaguely to the rise in crime, saying "we're not quite on pace to match" the reduction in murders last year.
Bloomberg trumpeted the reduction of crime during his mayoralty. Indeed, the increase in murders to date this year, 20, would have been a statistical blip back in 1990, when there were more than 2,200 murders in the city.
But given the level to which crime has fallen, some precincts and boroughs are seeing significant increases.
According to the statistics covering 2010 through March 28 (the latest available on the NYPD website), the number of murders in Manhattan has doubled from nine to 18.
They're up 50 percent in Queens and 30 percent in the Bronx, while down slightly (2 percent) in Brooklyn and considerably (by 25 percent) in Staten Island. Manhattan's share of city murders has jumped from one tenth to one sixth.
So far this year the number of murders is down in 21 precincts, up in 27 precincts and unchanged in 28. There are 29 precincts that, as of March 28, had yet to report a murder in this calendar year.
You can find your precinct by using the NYPD's precinct locator or looking at a map of precincts for the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.
Here are the murder stats for each precinct through March 28, a period in which the city saw 109 murders:
