Hurricane Irene formed in the Atlantic Ocean in August 2011, affecting the East Coast states. Irene was the ninth named storm and both the first hurricane and first major hurricane of 2011.

In 2009 HIV/AIDS was responsible for 933 deaths in New York City, according to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's annual compendium of vital statistics. AIDS was the ninth leading cause of death overall, but the third biggest killer of people aged 35-54, the fourth-ranked cause of death for blacks and the fifth-leading cause for Puerto Ricans.
